Should a Dedicated Server Be on the Cloud?

Companies use dedicated servers for a variety of different reasons. Some use dedicated servers to backup sensitive data to prevent against data loss. Alternatively, other organizations will use a dedicated server to run complex programs that use a lot of computer power. There are many different benefits to using dedicated servers and most businesses have decided to adapt the technology for their business. This doesn't, however, mean that the decision making process is over. Businesses still need to decide the size of the dedicated server, how the server will be set up (partitioned) and used, and where the dedicated server should be located.

In the Cloud or Keeping a Physical dedicated server

The main decision that a company will make around a dedicated server is whether they want the server to be a physical machine that they want to keep on site or online over a cloud that is accessed by remote internet access. There is no one answer to this question and different businesses may have a need to have both physical servers and those on the cloud.

Why a Physical Dedicated Server Might be Important for a Business

A physical server can be set up just like a cloud server with individual users logging in over the internet, or may be set up to require local access through a plugged in device. This latter option may be a good control for organizations with very sensitive or confidential information that they can not risk getting out. In addition, a physical server can be cheaper to maintain than a cloud server which may require a third party log in to access.

Why a Cloud Dedicated Server Might be Important for a Business

Some organizations like the ability to back up data on a cloud server which provides easier remote backup. A cloud server can be accessed from anywhere which can provide flexibility for an organization who may have remote employees. Further, it exports the maintenance to a third party site which can be better for an organization without the technical ability to maintain server access on their own.
